Anthem launches Mr Pigden award to recognise exceptional contributions to young people’s lives

We are thrilled to be able to give the very first Mr Pigden Award 2024 to Debbie Mckay, Deputy Headteacher at Benjamin Adlard Primary School.

Anthem has this week announced the first recipient of an award inspired by a former teacher who had a profound impact on the life of TV personality and former footballer Ian Wright.

The story of Mr Pigden went viral following a documentary which saw Ian Wright reunited with his former primary school teacher, and recounting how a chance encounter with Mr Pigden when he was eight years old marked a turning point in his life that gave him a sense of self-worth.

We are thrilled to be able to give the very first Mr Pigden Award 2024 to Debbie Mckay, Deputy Headteacher at Benjamin Adlard Primary School. Debbie has been an invaluable member of the Benjamin Adlard Primary School community for 29 years, dedicating her career to changing the lives of countless children.

Alongside her role as English and Phonics Lead, she is also an English specialist for the local English Hub. She demonstrates an unwavering commitment to driving improvements in reading has had a profound impact on Benjamin Adlard’s students. Debbie's passion for promoting a love of reading is evident in every aspect of her work, and her efforts have inspired students to develop a lifelong appreciation for books.

Headteacher Luke Lovelidge said: “Debbie’s legacy of fostering a nurturing and enriching environment will be felt for generations to come. We are immensely grateful for her dedication and the positive difference she has made in the lives of so many.”
