Deepings students spread a little Christmas cheer in the community
Year 11 food technology students rustled up a range of sweet bakes in readiness for a special afternoon tea, and the school also ran a '12 Days of Christmas Kindness' initiative which saw a range of groceries and goodies collected for the local food bank.
Students were delighted to host the local Age Concern group for their annual festive afternoon tea last week. Year 11 food technology students rose to the challenge and rustled up a huge volume of sweet bakes in readiness for the afternoon tea. Copious amounts of Christmas themed cakes, scones and biscuits were made in time for the visitors.
Year 8 and Year 13 students helped to run a raffle, which went down well with the guests, as did some festive songs sung by The Deepings Christmas pop choir.
The visitors enjoyed chatting to students and the school had some lovely feedback, with many commenting, as they left the school, on the conduct and manners of the young people.
The Deepings' commitment to spreading Christmas joy and goodwill did not stop with the Age Concern tea - the community also donated and gathered groceries for the local food bank, after running a Christmas kindness scheme.
From Monday, 1 December to Tuesday, 12 December, the school encouraged students to participate in its 12 Days of Christmas Kindness initiative, with each student asked to donate one food item during this period. The school’s sixth formers then collected the donations and carefully packaged them to share with local food banks, to support families in need over the holidays.
Kirstie Johnson, Headteacher at The Deepings School, said:
"The Age Concern tea was a great success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces from the local community and to hear them speak so well of our students and the welcome they received.
“We also hope that the provisions we have collected for members of our local community, who may be struggling this Christmas, will be well received.
“One of our school values is kindness and so we are very pleased to be able to spread some Christmas cheer and goodwill. Thanks to all our staff, students and families for their generosity in supporting us with these initiatives.”
