Mini Police Warn Local Drivers About the Hazards of Speeding
Students at Lincoln Carlton Academy are promoting safety and positive change in their school and the wider community.
Students from Lincoln Carlton Academy, have stepped up to help keep their community safe. As part of the Lincolnshire Mini Police programme, the school's Mini Police, supported by PCSO Lingard, recently took to the roads outside their school to educate drivers about safe speeds in residential areas.
Following a briefing session to ensure they were equipped with the most effective messaging. The pupils patrolled the road outside the school, using speed guns to monitor the speed of passing motorists and pull them over to have a “chat”, reminding them of the importance of abiding by the highway code.
The Lincolnshire Mini Police programme, established in 2018, provides an innovative and engaging way for primary school pupils to work with their local neighbourhood police teams. With the guidance of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), the programme fosters community responsibility and equips children with the confidence to make a positive impact.
This year, 30 pupils from Lincoln Carlton Academy, part of Anthem Schools Trust, expressed interest in joining the programme. Following a selection process where pupils were invited to apply in their own preferred style, such as creative posters and videos, and an interview with PCSO Lingard, 10 dedicated Year 5 pupils were chosen for their embodiment of the Mini-Police values.
Throughout the year, the Mini Police are actively involved in initiatives that promote safety, kindness and positive behaviour. PCSO Lingard works closely with the school, delivering whole class initiatives, such as an anti-bullying assembly to educate pupils on bike safety and helmet use. The Mini Police then go onto share what they have learnt with their peers, demonstrating a strong commitment to their role as community ambassadors.
Katie Cropper, Year 5 teacher and Mini Police Lead, shared the programme's impact:
"We’ve seen growth in the pupils’ confidence and ability to use their voices to promote responsible behaviour amongst their peers. They are fantastic role models, both in the playground and beyond."
Rebecca Malam, Headteacher at Lincoln Carlton Academy, emphasised how well the programme aligns with the school’s mission:
"At Lincoln Carlton Academy, we promote high achievement, respect for rights, and a love of learning to help children flourish. Our Mini Police embody these values, from reminding drivers to stick to speed limits to encouraging kindness and safe behaviour in the playground. We are incredibly proud of their efforts."
The Mini Police initiative at Lincoln Carlton Academy is a shining example of how schools and communities can work together to instil lifelong values and create safer environments for everyone.
